Medical advancements have improved the quality of life. Today science has allowed us to deal with all sorts of problems in the human body. Every day more and more studies are improving the medical experience for people. Newer technologies, improved procedures and effective dental treatments have improved our quality of life and boosted self esteem.
Dental procedures have also advanced greatly! Today it is possible to have complete cure for all dental problems. Unlike, a few years back, dental procedures are now painless, fast and long lasting. It not just cures but provides complete prevention. One such revolution in the field of dental procedures has been dental bridges. Simply put, it is creating a bridge between one or more missing teeth to fill a gap. Unlike the more permanent solution for missing teeth, a Bridge is a combination of one or more false teeth to fill the gap between permanent and natural teeth. The false teeth are called pontics, and the permanent teeth on either side are called abutment teeth. These false teeth or bridges can be made in gold, alloy, porcelain or a combination of these.
Dental bridges are a great way to get back the ability to chew and speak normally. It also helps restore and maintain the original shape of your face and natural smile. The gap can create disposition of the natural teeth, whereas a bridge can help the teeth remain in natural position.
Depending on individual patient needs, there are three types of bridges available:
- Traditional Bridge: It creates a crown for the tooth on either side of the missing tooth.
- Cantilever Bridge: Used when there are adjacent teeth on only one side of the missing tooth
- Maryland Bonded Bridge: Made of metal or porcelain on each side of the bridge to bond to existing teeth.
First the abutment teeth are prepared for the procedure by recontouring them. Then an impression is taken to prepare the bridge. Second, the bridge is fit to perfection! It is that easy and requires very little time.
